June 2025 Go Local Newsletter

Dear Go Local Loyalists,

Happy June, Newsletter Subscribers! I took vacation in May and didn’t manage to send out a newsletter, so I’m getting June’s out at the top of the month!

Before I share the very Asheville story of birdhouses and retailers, I’d like to thank you for supporting our local, independent business community. We saw May start to pick up from prior months, which brings optimism for the summer. There is a big initiative behind campaigns that let people know that WNC is open for business! And boy, do our businesses need that help! I don’t know if you caught Josh Stein on Late Night with Stephen Colbert (clip here) or saw that Gayle King from CBS Morning Show crashed a wedding at the Grove Park Inn while here to film a segment on the recovery. (wedding crasher story here). Not to leave anyone out, Robin Roberts from Good Morning America was visiting a few months ago to report on Helene Recovery (clip here). All this is to say, WNC and Asheville, with a lot of help from both within and outside our community, will continue to recover and the economy will continue to improve. Our locals are the best, so please continue to show up for our community!

Birdhouses Enjoy Their New Homes in Downtown and West Asheville Storefronts

I love this story because it is so representative of why we love Asheville. Retailers, Artists and Nonprofits partner to help improve food sustainability in our community.

I’ve put in past newsletters about Bountiful Cities (BC), a local nonprofit and Go Local business member whose focus is food sustainability partnered with local artists to create birdhouses to be auctioned off at their annual fundraiser on June 28th (flyer with all info can be found here. Its a free event so hope you can attend!).

Last Friday, Lucy Phillips, Board member of BC and shown here eating The Hops latest ice cream collaboration with BC, The Bees Knees, and I delivered12 birdhouses to 12 Go Local members to display these beautiful pieces of art (and functioning birdhouses) for the month leading up to the auction.

Photos are of the store owners with their specially selected birdhouses. Pictured here is Margaret, owner of Dog & Pony Show on Market Street downtown. Below is Kait from Sparky’s Toys and Gifts and employees at East Fork proudly showing their assigned birdhouses. Also below is a list of all the locations. Please take time this month to visit these stores, see the birdhouses up close and read about the artists who created these amazing birdhouses. Our retailers would be happy to see you and, hopefully, you’ll find one or two you want to bid on at the auction and help support an important organization.

Locations:
Downtown: delighted, AdLib Clothing, K2 Studio, Dog & Pony Show, East Fork, Sow True Seed.

West Asheville: Whist, Flora & Forage, Chlorophyll, Sparky’s Toys and Gifts, and The Hop, West Asheville.

Congrats to our Go Local Members Who Took Home Awards from the Asheville Chamber’s Annual Meeting

This past Monday night, at the Asheville Chamber of Commerce annual meeting, outstanding local leaders were recognized for their contributions to our community. Please join me in congratulating Go Local business members The Hop Ice Cream, led by Ashley and Greg Garrison, that was named Family Business of the Year, while Sara Martin of Online Training Concepts and the team behind Perfectly Ad Hoc Hospitality (Table + All Day Darling) – Alicia Hill, Jacob Sessoms, and Patrick Rumley – were recognized as Small Business Leaders of the Year.

A sad goodbye to Laughing Seed, and all Asheville treasurers that have closed

I, like you, was saddened when I read the news that Laughing Seed was closing their doors at the end of May. If you didn’t have a chance to read their goodbye, you can find it here. They opened in 1993…so hard to believe that was 32 years ago. And in that span of time, they became a favorite dining establishment for local and visitors who loved original, great tasting vegetarian food. Btw, they’re looking for someone to take it over so if that’s you or someone you know, you’ll find the right contact in the link above.

All of the businesses we’ve lost either directly or indirectly because of Helene is a big loss to our community. At this point, while it would take a lot of space to name them individually, I want to share my sincerest thanks to the contribution they made to our local independent business community. They have helped make Asheville Asheville and we appreciate you more than words can express.

Again, Thank-You for Your Continued Support

I continue to be so overwhelmed by the amount of local support shown to our local independent business community. But there is still a long road ahead. I made this request last month and will continue to make it every month. Please continue to support these businesses. They need you and are counting on you to help them survive. Let’s all be there for them so a year or 2 years from now, we can look back and know we showed up for this community that makes Asheville so special.

Like the proclamation says: “Love Asheville” and what better way to do that then to support our local independent business community in whatever way works best for you.
